Big Buddha hill

Wat Phra Khao Yai

District / neighborhood: Bang Lamong

The Hill of the Big Buddha is as its name is - a hill rising to a height of 100 meters above sea level, on which stands a temple built in the 40s, in which there is a large and impressive Buddha statue no less than 18 meters high, overlooking the Canopy of Pattaya. You can see the statue from a long distance and even from the beach of Jomtien when it peeks out from among the trees surrounding the temple.

The temple in which the giant statue, which is considered the largest of its kind in this region, attracts many visitors every day, including religious and spiritual people who come to the place to participate in the prayer ceremonies held there or to meditate, architecture and history enthusiasts who want to get an impression of the place in this aspect, curious tourists and those who want Take advantage of the beautiful place as an observation point from which a spectacular view can be seen.

In order to reach the observation point, the temple and the statue, you will have to climb up a flight of stairs, and if you have the strength and desire to enjoy the way as well, you should look at the railing on both sides of the flight of stairs, on which a golden dragon is sculpted from whose mouth emerges the mythical snake Nagas with seven heads.
For your attention, if you have difficulty with mobility, you can hire tuktuk or bus services and use them.

When you get to the temple, you can be impressed by the famous statue, but this is not the only interesting thing in the place - in the temple itself there are seven other Buddha statues, smaller and placed in different positions, symbolizing the seven days of the week and nearby there is another observation point and the Chinese park San Xian, which are also worth visiting .

In addition, if you want to witness a traditional prayer, this is a great place to do so because the temple is still used according to its original character as a place of prayer for Buddhist and local monks, but remember that although viewing is possible for tourists, it is a holy place and as such you have to follow the rules - dress accordingly, take off your shoes and not speak loudly

Tip from us: During the climb up the stairs you will notice that there are people sitting there selling cages in which birds are kept. They sell the birds so that you will release them when you get to the temple and thus you will, according to the belief, gain good karma. It is indeed quite tempting, especially for those who love animals and see the release of the birds as a good alternative to living in a cage - but in fact this is exactly the action that encourages the traders to imprison more birds and the most successful way to stop the phenomenon is simply not to give it a hand.
