If you analyze the travel patterns of tourists in southern Thailand (including Israeli tourists), the vast majority have probably visited, or will visit, Phuket. It's one of the largest islands in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea off the country's west coast. Being a large island allows it to contain a wide range of areas within it, so it can suit both those looking for the noise and chaos of beach parties and crowded streets, and those seeking peace and quiet on white sand with clear waters. That's why Phuket is a magnet for every type of traveler, from alcohol-loving college kids to families with young children on vacation.

Where should you stay in Phuket?

The most famous and busiest area in Phuket is Patong. It's a long stretch of beachfront, along which most of the island's businesses, restaurants, entertainment venues and hotels are concentrated. That's why Patong, and especially the heart of its beach strip, is mainly suited to young travelers and party-goers. It's also why most of the hotels here cater to that crowd, which means accommodation prices there tend to be relatively low. For families, and for those who don't want the hustle and bustle of central Patong but still want to enjoy well-developed tourist infrastructure, it's worth heading a bit south or north of Patong.

If beaches packed to the brim with people, vendors and hawkers put you off, it's worth heading to other beaches. Kamala Beach is a recommended destination for families thanks to its calm atmosphere and beautiful beaches, but keep in mind that hotels there are priced accordingly. This is an area where you'll find luxury hotels and places that will pamper you just as you'd expect from a Thai island. Another beach that can be a great fit for a family vacation is Karon Beach.

Ultimately, given the island's size and popularity, almost every area in Phuket can offer hotels in nearly any budget range. The main consideration here is what kind of vacation and activities you're looking for. Once you choose the area you want to stay in based on these factors, chances are you'll be able to find a suitable hotel on one of the forty-plus varied beaches that surround the island.

When is the best time to visit Phuket?

This decision, too, depends a lot on what you want from the island. The vast majority of tourists arrive between November and April, since these are the months when the weather on the island is most pleasant. The rise in the number of tourists also leads to a rise in hotel prices and attraction costs, which peak around December through February.

If you're coming to surf, or if you're more flexible with your dates and willing to brave the occasional sudden downpour, you'll find that prices really drop from May through October. The lower number of tourists means far less crowded beaches, and a quiet that's hard to find in Phuket at other times of the year.
