Koh Samui is the counterpart island to Phuket, but it's located on the eastern side of southern Thailand, in the Gulf of Thailand. This large island draws vacationers of every kind and background, thanks to the wide range of attractions, accommodations and beaches it offers. Here, every type of traveler can find their place, from budget backpackers craving parties to travelers with a higher budget who are looking for quiet, endless sea and white beaches. Just like in Phuket, your first choice here should be what kind of trip you're looking for, and only afterward should you look for the right hotel.
The island's popularity means that in almost every area you can find hotels across most price ranges, although it's fair to cautiously say that most hotels in Koh Samui fall within the low-to-mid budget range.
Koh Samui's proximity to other islands like Koh Phangan and Koh Tao makes it a bit less dependent on the weather, and tourists arrive there almost all year round depending on the activities they're after (and don't forget the monthly parties on nearby Koh Phangan). The peak tourist season is split into two periods, mainly between December-January and July-August. During these months the number of tourists visiting the island surges, and the weather also delivers plenty of sunny days, even if perhaps a bit too hot and humid. This is also the period when hotel prices are at their highest, whether you're staying at a cheap motel or a luxury resort.
On the other hand, the quietest months on the island are October and November, both because of the weather and because the nearby marine national park is closed for most of this period. These are the months when you'll find the lowest number of tourists on the island, and the best hotel deals along its beaches.
The areas most packed with tourists, and the ones that usually offer hotels in the most comfortable price range, are Chaweng Beach (Chaweng) the central one, close to the airport, and the resort town of Lamai (Lamai) right next to it. These areas are known for very active nightlife, a heavy tourist presence (especially during peak season) and maximum convenience when it comes to businesses and getting to and from the island (thanks to the proximity to the airport). That said, these aren't the most suitable areas for couples on a romantic getaway or tourists looking for very high-end hotels.
At the other end of the noise-and-partying scale, you'll find Mae Nam Beach (Maenam Beach), relatively secluded and facing Koh Phangan. This beach is known for its quiet atmosphere and few tourists, and at night its shores are empty, with the waves as the only source of noise. In this area you can find both very cheap guesthouses and luxury resorts.
For those who want to combine both sides of the island, the fishing village of Bophut (Bophut village) is probably the place for you. It's a small village that works hard to preserve the traditional Thai atmosphere, so you won't find Chaweng's party-fueled frenzy here, but it's also not as quiet as Mae Nam. Bophut is probably the ideal location for families with children and older travelers, both because of the high standard of its hotels and because of the local businesses and the beautiful beach right next to the village.
