Diving in Copenhagen

Welcome to one of the most beautiful and famous diving destinations in the world - Copenhagen! One of the biggest advantages for those who choose to dive in Copenhagen is the warm water, which even in the cold seasons maintains an average of 29 degrees throughout the day because it is an area with a tropical climate. Therefore, it is possible to snorkel in the area Copenhagen (including in the Thai islands) with only a bathing suit, and those who choose to dive can do so with a short diving suit up to 3 mm thick.

The warmth of the water also means that you can find spectacular reefs in the area with fish and other sea creatures in a variety of colors and shapes that you have never seen before, which make diving even more worthwhile and interesting. Most of the time the sea is smooth and flat, the underwater visibility is good and the conditions are excellent for diving and snorkeling, but during the monsoon season (October-November) extreme weather conditions must be taken into account, especially storms and storms, which do not allow free diving and snorkeling.

In Copenhagen there are different and varied possibilities to get to know the animal world under the water:

Snorkel

There are quite a few places to snorkel within a very short swimming distance (sometimes it's more correct to say walking because the water in the shoreline area is very shallow) from the shoreline. Some points worth noting are Secret Beach, Had Yehau, Had Salad, and May Had.

There are many convenience stores on the island (such as 7/11) where you can buy a snorkel, mask and fins, but if you just want to try it out, you can borrow snorkel equipment from the many dive shops scattered around the island.

Diving and diving courses

Thailand is known as one of the cheapest places in the world to take a diving course, and this does not necessarily mean that you compromise on quality. The instructors and equipment are top notch, and the riffs are spectacular.

Recommended companies for a diving course in Copenhagen:

  • Haad Yao Divers located in Had Yahao (in the northwestern part of the island).
  • Sail Rock Divers (Sail Rock Divers) which is located in Chalokalam (in the northern part of the island, where the marina is also located from where most of the boats leave for diving).
  • Pirate Divers ((Pirate Divers) located in Had Salad (northwestern part of the island).

Free diving and free diving courses

Another type of water sport is free diving. Free diving, for those of you who are not aware of it, is actually diving without balloons, but with the help of a technique of holding air in the lungs. It is suitable for those who want to feel free under the surface of the water without the weight of the diving equipment, but of course the time that can be spent under water is much more limited. At first it may cause fear, but learning the technique of holding the air is simple and within one day of diving you can go much deeper than you thought.

The most recommended freediving company in Koh Phangan is Apnea Koh Phangan located in Chalokalam. There you get on a ferry and go down to dive at the various sites, using only your lungs. You can also purchase freediving courses, go for training, or for introductory dives only with the world of freediving, all through the same company.

Diving sites in Copenhagen

The dive sites closest to the island are actually the same as the snorkel sites, and you can rent equipment from the dive shops and reach them by swimming from the shore. The maximum depth that can be reached in these areas is 18 meters. More diving sites are closer to Koh Tao (the famous diving island), and to reach them you have to take a ferry, which is organized by the diving company you have chosen and is included in the price. The trip takes about an hour and a half to two hours.

Sail Rock  - The famous site in the area which is actually a very large rock, or a very small island, depending on how you want to look at it, when under the sea level a colorful and beautiful reef grows in it. The maximum depth in it is 40 meters. In season (March-June) you can see whale sharks there.

Shark Bay A diving site located about a kilometer from the southern coast of Koh Tao. The site is named so because of its shape, which looks like a shark's fin, but you can also see quite a few sharks of the blacktip shark type (which is not dangerous to humans). Different species of sea turtles can also be seen there. The maximum depth of the site is 28 meters.

Sattakut Wreck - This site is actually a 48-meter shipwreck from the Second World War era, which was deliberately sunk in 2011 at a depth of 30 meters and at a distance of about 40 meters from the north-west coast of Koh Tao, in order to create an artificial reef that attracts schools of barracudas, stingrays and locus.

Southwest Pinnacles - About 7 kilometers southwest of Ko Tau is the site which is actually a "wall" with peaks and gaps that moves at depths between 17 and 28 meters. It is a wonderful place to see different types of sea anemones and corals.

Chumphon Pinnacles - These underwater peaks ranging from depths of 20 to 36 meters are mainly suitable for experienced divers. The shapes of the stones there are spectacular and you can see big fish there, and in season also whale sharks.

White rock - This site is famous for a fish called Titan Triggerfish that lives there. It is a beautiful fish, but can be aggressive, and it is important to strictly obey all the instructions of the dive guide while diving with it. The reef is built in the form of shelves that serve as a home for many different types of fish in many colors. This site is the most famous site for night dives. Its maximum depth is 28 meters.

Green rock - A paradise for lovers of underwater adventure, because of the many caves, arches and crevices in it. A relative of the Titan Triggerfish, aka the Yellow Margin Triggerfish, can be found there. Remember that as fun as it is to follow him through the mazes of this underwater city, he can also be very aggressive so keep an appropriate distance and obey the instructions of the guides. The maximum depth of this site is 30 meters.

There are many more diving sites, which are well known by all the diving companies and are adapted according to your diving training. Each company will be happy to offer you the variety of sites you can dive in. Their number is almost infinite, therefore If you want to go through every dive site in the area, you will probably have to stay there for many months, or simply return again and again to the warm and beautiful waters of Copenhagen.
