The Grand Palace in Bangkok (Palace of the King of Thailand)

The GrandPalace

District / neighborhood: Pra Nakhon

The Grand Palace in the Thai capital is the most popular and busiest tourist site in the city and perhaps in the entire country. Every day, crowds of visitors from all over the world flock to witness the huge and impressive building, which presents the national culture at its best. The palace was built in 1782 by King Rama I, who sought to upgrade his residence. Over time, it turned from a simple wooden structure into a magnificent brick castle that stands majestically in the heart of the city. Today the place does not house the royal family, but only serves as a historical institution and the home of an important Buddha display.

How to get there Arriving at the Grand Palace can be an experience in itself. You can take a river-taxi right to the site. This way, you will be able to get to know Bangkok's river - Chao Phraya up close, avoid the city traffic jams and enjoy a relaxed cruise. To get to the taxi-river, take the The BTS Skytrain Get off at Saphan Taksin station. From there it's a short walk to the pier from where the taxi departs. In a river taxi, get off after nine stops, at the elephant pier - Tha Chang pier. Even before you go down you will not be able to miss the sight of the impressive palace that stands next to the river.

If you are staying in the area Kwasan Street You can reach the palace by walking for 20-25 minutes.

opening times - Every day, 15:30-8:30. It is recommended to arrive in the morning, when the place is less crowded with visitors and groups.

If you are visiting during the hot season (March-May) and especially during the afternoon, take into account that it will be very sunny and humid outside. Prepared accordingly.

dress code The royal palace as its name is, visitors are accordingly required to dress modestly and respect the place. As in any religious or royal site in Thailand, you must wear a shirt with sleeves, pants or a skirt above the knee and below, no tights and no clothing with religious symbols or blatant prints (metal shirts are also not accepted). You should not try to be clever - there is strict enforcement and you will not be allowed to enter the place, or you will be asked to pay a deposit for a cover scarf that they will lend you. Upon entering the palace you will be asked to take off your shoes and leave them at the entrance.

Prices Entrance to the palace costs 500 baht. For training with headphones you will have to add 200 baht. If you want more comprehensive guidance, at the entrance you can see locals who will offer their personal guidance. Note that you can (and should) haggle over the price as well as check if they have a guide certificate.

what is in the area - GodA palace is surrounded by many other attractions, some within a short walk. You should take advantage of the visit to the palace to visit the interesting temples in the area; Wat Pho is south of the palace and is considered the best place to have a traditional Thai massage. Wat Mahathat is one of the oldest temples in the city. It is one stop north of the palace and contains a large and famous meditation center.

Beware of scams! As in any touristic place in Thailand, around the palace you should be careful of local residents who will try to take advantage of the "innocence" of the tourists. Some will try to convince you that the palace is now closed and will offer to take you to other attractions or "equal" stores where they receive a commission for your every purchase. Sometimes they will approach you and say that you are not dressed according to the dress code required to enter the palace (even if you are), and then they will offer you to purchase clothes or scarves at exorbitant prices. Also, if you take a tuk-tuk, find out in advance how much it should cost, try not to bring valuables with you and beware of acts of theft that are common in the area.
