Chao Phraya is not only the main river in Bangkok, but the main artery of the whole of Thailand and an important part of its economy. It crosses the city and spills into the Gulf of Thailand and it is likely that during your visit to the city you will cross it several times on one of the many bridges that pass over it. In fact, the river is such a dominant part of the city's landscape that the nickname "Venice of the East" stuck to it.
The cruise is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the views that surround the river, get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and watch the main attractions from a slightly different angle. You will be able to recognize from the boat Wat Pho, the palace of the King of Thailand and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
You can choose between several types of cruises, depending on the experience you are interested in or the price you want to pay. There are relatively simple tourist ships at popular prices, but these may be more crowded during peak hours. The ticket you purchase gives you access for the whole day and you can get on and off them as you wish at any of the eight different piers. Bangkok is a big city and there are many stations on the river, so it is highly recommended to take a map of the city with you so that you can find your way around and know where to get off.
The price of the tourist boat is about 4 dollars.
Another option, more luxurious and expensive, is to board one of the luxury ships that float on the river, where you can enjoy space and even combine a romantic experience for couples with an authentic Thai dinner on the water, cocktails, traditional shows or a band playing jazz. Some of these ships also offer air conditioning on the lower deck, while on the upper deck you can enjoy the view. The price of a cruise on such a ship can reach 80 dollars.
During the day, the attraction is especially suitable for children and families. You can stop at the various temples, get an impression of life and trade in the canals and even feed the giant fish that live in the river. If you prefer a more intimate experience, you can rent a private boat for a short cruise.
There are also express boats on the river, which are actually an urban mass transportation service. They are extremely cheap but fast and less suitable as a panoramic experience. Identify them by the orange, green or yellow flag. The price is between one and two dollars.
The best point to board the cruise is the main pier or Storm Bridge pier. Both can be reached via the Sapan Taskin BTS station.
