Wat Arun Temple

Wat Arun Ratchawararam

District / neighborhood: city center

A temple that is better known as the "Temple of the Dawn" and is located on the west side of the Chao Phraya River that crosses the city. The beautiful and special architecture combined with the pastoral location on the banks of the river, make the place one of the most impressive temples in the city and a mesmerizing experience that simply must not be missed on a trip. In the morning a pastoral silence surrounds the place and at night it becomes colorful, with many lights decorating the complex and reflecting in the water of the nearby river.

The temple is named after the Indian goddess of dawn, Aruna. According to the well-known myth, the structure represents Mount Meru, the center of the world according to Buddhist teachings. At the beginning of the 19th century the complex was renovated and expanded by King Rama II. From buildings 2 meters high, impressive buildings rising to a height of no less than 16 meters were built, alongside a multitude of statues, terraces and stone canopies that were added to the place.

At the entrance to the complex you will see 2 huge statues that will greet you when you arrive at the entrance - the large monks' room. From there, continue wandering through picturesque corridors with beautiful Buddha statues, marble courtyards and murals with Chinese elements such as dragons, lions, warriors and other mythical figures. The small temples that make up the complex are colorful and decorated each in a unique way. Especially beautiful is the white temple decorated with porcelain mosaics. You can go up the stairs of the buildings and look up at the wonderful view of the place.

tip: If you arrived at the place during sunset you will find yourself in a magical and photogenic scene. The best vantage point to watch the view of the temple at sunset is actually from a bar located on the roof of a hotel named after the temple and located on the other side of the river (Eagle Nest bar). It is possible and recommended to visit the place even if you are not a guest of the hotel.

How to get there - The easiest way is to take a taxi to the area, which is full of tourist attractions, so you can combine the temple with a day trip. The more experiential and beautiful option is to take a ferry from Tha Tien Pier to the temple (3 baht cost).

opening times – Every day, 8:00-17:30. Keep in mind that the place starts to fill up from 10:00.

Prices - Entrance to the complex is free. The climb up the tallest tower inside - Phra Prang involves a fee of 50 baht per person.
