Kosmoy is located quite a distance from the capital Bangkok - about 700 kilometers south of it. You can make the transition in different ways: by train, buses, ferry and of course by flight. The cheaper ways to get to Kosmoy are not direct and often require a journey of many hours that includes changing buses, getting on a ferry, etc. But if you manage to book a direct flight ahead of time, you will get a relatively affordable price and a particularly comfortable transit.
Flying to Kosmoy is not only the fastest and safest way to get to the island, it is also the only way that does not require a change of means of transportation along the way. Every day, dozens of direct flights depart from Bangkok to Kosmoi Airport, starting from the early morning hours, every hour, until the night hours. Most of the flights are operated by well-known local airlines such as Bangkok Air, Air Asia and Nok Air.
In relation to domestic flights in Thailand, the flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui is considered expensive. During the dry season of the islands (December to February), the largest mass of tourists arrives in the area, so during this period it will be more difficult to get a flight and the prices climb accordingly. The prices of direct flights range from 3,000 baht to 12,000 baht and more during the peak tourist season.
Flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui depart from both Bangkok airports - Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi (be careful not to get confused!). The duration of the flight is about an hour to an hour and 45 minutes, varies depending on the operating company. As befits an international and highly touristic airport, Kosmoi Airport offers many services such as a lounge, Wi-Fi, ATMs, children's play areas, restaurants and a shopping area. From Kosmoy airport you can rent a car, take a shuttle to the hotel or take a taxi or tuk-tuk to the city center, the drivers will eagerly wait for you outside the field. It is not a long trip (about half an hour). Remember that it is possible and acceptable to haggle over the prices before you get into the car.
Another option for a flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui is a flight from Bangkok to airports near Koh Samui - Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat or Chumpon. These flights are also usually operated by the well-known Thai airlines Thai Lion Air, Air Asia, Nok Air. The availability of these flights is relatively good, and the significant difference is the price, which will be significantly lower than a direct flight to the island. The big disadvantage is that the savings will cost you in a good few hours or a whole day of transitions. You will have to take a ferry to the island, in addition to a bus or taxi from the airport to the point where the ferry departs. The ferry takes about an hour and a half to arrive at the port. It should be taken into account that the times are not always coordinated and there may be a waiting time of several hours, and sometimes even almost a whole day, between the landing of the flight in the field and the departure time of the ferry.
For the sake of good order, it is recommended to close all crossings in advance, at the local travel agencies or online. You can also purchase full transit packages that include all the necessary transits. Also, after the ferry arrives on the island, there is another 40 minute drive from the port where you will dock to the central area of Kosmoi, where most of the hotels are located and the tourist attractions. Buying such a package will give you a discount of up to 50% of the price, since the prices start at 1,500 baht.
