The Secret Buddha Garden is a magical and beautiful garden that was established in 1976 by a local farmer from the island of Kosmoi when he was 77 years old and continued to develop and cultivate it until his death at the age of 91. The spectacular garden is located in the heart of the hills of Kosmoi and is known for the many Buddha statues found in it which make it one of the main attractions most in the area.
Since it is a privately owned garden, the atmosphere in it is unique, warm and pleasant. The place itself is well maintained and clean and even though many tourists visit it every day, it manages to maintain modesty and we don't feel crowded or too touristy.
During your visit to the garden area you will enjoy an abundance of colorful flowers, impressive trees and even a small stream that flows through the site and creates a nice small series of waterfalls. Over a hundred Buddha statues of different sizes (most of them life-size) with different symbols are carefully arranged around the garden, in different positions according to the different ideals they represent, and we will recognize that a lot of thought has gone into the way they are presented there.
Without a doubt, this is one of the most special places in the region, and even those who are not religiously affiliated will be able to enjoy the simplicity and beauty that the local farmer managed to create with two hands and a lot of love. The only catch (if you can call it that) is the road required to get to the place which is accessible only to 4x4 off-road vehicles.
The road to the secret garden passes through the jungle of Kosmoi, crosses rivers and mountains and includes steep ascents and descents, sharp curves and is recommended only for experienced local drivers. The journey takes about two hours and unfortunately (or happily, in the end it is a spectacularly beautiful road with breathtaking views) this is the only way to get to the place.
Another option is to join the famous safari tours held in the area, which pass through this site, among others.
If you are visiting the Secret Garden, it is highly recommended to combine the visit with a stop at the highest point in Kosmoi from where you can see a beautiful panoramic view of the island and its entire surroundings. If you are able to visit this point at sunset, then you are in for an unforgettable experience and some particularly photogenic photos.
