A little history

Hundreds of years ago, Ayutthaya was a very large city and an important junction connecting East and West Asia. The city's main period of prosperity was between the 14th and 18th centuries, when over a million residents lived there. The strategic location, between 3 large rivers and a huge sea, gave it an important status and great wealth. Merchants and businessmen from all over the world used to pass through it and many important Buddhist temples and monasteries were established on its territory.

In 1767, the Burmese army took over the city, after many months of being under siege. The city was completely destroyed, the art treasures, books and documents from that period were stolen or burned, until almost no trace of its history remained. The only remains were impressive stone buildings, palaces and monasteries, which are a hallmark of the city today.

After many years, in 1991, the UNESCO organization granted its official recognition to the old city. Since then, it is mainly used as a spring, a national historical park, and of course as a world heritage site that attracts many tourists throughout the year.
