It is a small island in the shape of a turtle (hence the typical mindset of its travelers) whose total area does not exceed much more than 25 square kilometers - 7.5 kilometers in length and 3.5 in width, which allows you to get to know all the cute corners it offers in a short time and makes the experience In it for a more intimate.

The local population on the island is about 750 people and the main economy is based on tourism - scuba diving in spectacular coral reefs that surround the island, hostels and clubs, bungalows, fishing and coconuts.

Directions to Koh Tao

The island itself does not have an airport, so the arrival is via ferries from the nearby cities and islands: Kosmoy, Copenhagen, Chomphon and Surat Thani, which can be reached by flight, train or bus.

The last option is usually the cheapest, but the second option is also not expensive at all and is much more luxurious (especially the night train which includes beds for sleeping. Tickets must be bought in advance, especially at the height of the season). The tourists will all arrive at the main city on the island - Ban Mae Hat, and from there they will continue on their way or go on a sightseeing tour around it.

Average times and costs:

Fast ferry (departs from Copenhagen, Kosmoi and Chomphon) - one and a half to two hours, 600-400 baht.

Night ferry (departs from Surat Thani) - eight hours (23:00 p.m.-07:00 a.m.), 550 baht.

Transportation on Koh Tao

On the island itself, the main transportation is by motorcycle, but since there is only one main road from which small roads diverge and mainly roads that are not paved, this is a dangerous and unsafe means, so if you still rent one - take care of yourself. Average rental cost: 200 baht per day + passport as a deposit.

Beyond the motorcycle, the alternatives that are better to get around with are:

Taxis - Average cost 300-200 baht per trip, and it is recommended to check the length of the route before the trip (which may be quite short since the island is not large) and negotiate a price with the driver accordingly.

Bicycle and scooter - A cheaper, more convenient and safer way. The cost amounts to about 50 baht per day and there are no additional expenses such as fuel.

Weather in Koh Tao

The most recommended season to travel on the island is in the months of February - April, but actually from December to the beginning of August the temperatures and the general weather in the area are considered relatively comfortable and some would prefer to travel there precisely in the months of July to the beginning of August.

The average temperatures in these months are 31-23 degrees, and the average water temperature is almost 30 degrees. The combination ofThe great air and the fact that the island is relatively isolated, is an ideal recipe for a successful vacation.

General atmosphere in Koh Tao

The general atmosphere on the island corresponds to its name - "Turtle Island" - and is lighter and slower, but in fact you can find everything on the island and if your soul craves a more lively atmosphere - remove worry from your heart, this is also available.

The white sands and turquoise waters will suit those who like a "backpack" style vacation looking for a place to relax, but they can also be used for more vigorous activities such as a wild game of tag after a few cocktails served on the beach.

Those looking for less isolated corners will also be able to find more touristic bays and next to them bustling restaurants and pubs and even entire streets full of shops and smiling tourists. If this is the atmosphere you are looking for, you can spend the night in the Sairee Beach area where there are relatively cheap resorts and a nightlife that includes alcohol, acrobatics and fire shows, music and even drag shows.

Attractions in Koh Tao

Koh Tao in the water

Diving in Koh Tao: Those coming to the island are advised to equip themselves or rent diving or snorkeling equipment, even the most minimal and for a short time, you'll find out - maybe after you see what everyone is excited about, you too will catch the bug. Diving in Koh Tao is almost a must, andSometimes even a look at the clear turquoise water is enough to see the wonder hidden in it - shoals of fish, sea turtles, sea urchins and corals of many colors and sizes moving side by side in perfect harmony.

Snorkeling equipment can be rented on the spot, if you didn't bring it from home, and swim along the beaches (relax, it's not deep water). If you decide to go all the way, you can also rent diving equipment to take a breather, enjoy the spectacular view and indulge in the silence. At night you can see tiny creatures called "plankton" that will fill the black space with a shining light that is unmatched in nature. The braver and more experienced will be able to dive at the "Shark Beach" and with a bit of luck (if you can call it that) come across sharks, seals and maybe even huge whale sharks (don't worry, they only eat plankton).

Did you fall in love? Excellent. There are many schools on the island that offer diving courses at affordable prices (relative to the country) for all levels, from the inexperienced who are having their first experience to expert divers who want to enrich their technique and diving abilities.

Recommended diving sites

  • Unicorn - Recommended for experienced divers as it is a wrecked cargo ship at a depth of about 50 meters, where large schools of fish live.
  • Southwest pinnacle - Limestone rocks on which a coral reef is built, among which schools of fish roam, including barracudas, and some have even managed to see seals. Be careful of strong currents that characterize the place.

Yoga and nature walks: Visitors looking for peace and quiet along with connecting with nature will be able to participate in yoga classes. Travel enthusiasts will be able to find on the island a multitude of itineraries, mostly short up to half a day, to hidden coves or hidden viewpoints from which you can see the entire island and admire its beauty. Those looking for more intense attractions can contact one of the schools for rock climbing and climb the granite rocks that kiss the shores of the island, or even consider participating in Thai boxing lessons.

Recommended viewing points

  • John Suwan observation - is in the south of the island and when the horizon is clear you can also see Kosmoi and Ko Pha Ngan from it. The duration of the climb is about 20 minutes.
  • Koh Nang Yuan lookout - is in the north of the island and you can see Koh Tao and small islands nearby. This point is considered the most impressive but the climb is considered not easy and lasts about 30 minutes.

ביטוח - Riding motorcycles along with a wide variety of water sports activities require appropriate insurance. Be sure to take out and activate the insurance before you leave the country, as some insurances cannot be taken out from abroad and cannot be activated during a disaster.

Of money - In addition to currency exchange counters, there are also ATMs, mainly in the western part of the island, and they can be used with international credit cards.

medicine - The medicine on the island is not advanced, it mainly includes pharmacies and small clinics and does not offer some of the life-saving services, for that you have to go to the nearby islands or the city Bangkok
