Doi Sutep Temple

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

District / Neighborhood: Myong Chiang Mai

The Doi Suthep Temple is one of the most recognized and popular temples among travelers in the wonderful city of Chiang Mai and without a doubt a point you will not want to miss during your visit to the city, as beyond the magnificent temple you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the beautiful city during the tour.

The special observation is made possible thanks to the location of the temple, which is located on Mount Sutep (hence the name of the temple) at a height of no less than 1675 meters, but not only the observation makes the visit to the place unforgettable, but also over 250 square kilometers surrounding the site, which Belong to a national park in which there is a forest with many species of plants and animals.

In addition, during the visit to the temple you can admire the pagodas, statues and bells, watch the worship ceremonies, participate in meditation and even receive a blessing from the gods.

For folklore lovers, behind the impressive place is hidden a story that the locals enjoy telling, about the king of Thailand who received one of the bones of Buddha as a gift, strapped the sacred bone to the back of an elephant and they started walking up the mountain. Suddenly, before they reached the top of the mountain, the elephant miraculously died, but not before turning around three times. According to legend, this is the place where the temple was built.

Another story is about a group of monks who harnessed some of Buddha's ashes to the back of an elephant, which they sent out into nature with the decision that wherever it stops - there the temple will be built. The elephant began to climb up the mountain until it stopped and began to cry and where it stopped, the temple stands.

Whether it is true or a fictional story, the temple which was built in the 14th century AD does indeed stand up the mountain to this day, so in order to reach it you have to climb up a long flight of stairs or purchase a ticket for a carriage. If you choose the first way you will climb 309 steps until you reach the temple and if you choose the second you will say goodbye to 30 baht. If you are not particularly fond of climbing stairs, the recommendation is to go up to the site by car and go down on foot, so you can also enjoy the staircase which is considered particularly impressive.

If this is one of your last stops before returning home, it should be noted that down the stairs is a lovely market with food stalls and souvenirs, so you can take advantage of the opportunity and buy something for your loved ones.

Address - 9 Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200

Opening Hours - Monday to Sunday at 06:00-20:00
