Chopsticks hill

Chopsticks hill (khao takiab)

Khao Takiab Hill, also known as "Mountain of Monkeys" and "Hill of Chopsticks", is a pastoral and quiet place located not far from Hua Hin (at a distance of only 6 kilometers). From the beach of Hua Hin, the same mountain is very prominent and you can even see from a distance the impressive golden Buddha statue that stands in the temple at the top. The temple at the top of Chopsticks Hill is called "Wat Khao Lad", or "Monkey Temple".

It is not known why the mountain got the name "Chopsticks Hill", but at least for the monkeys it is quite clear. The place is full of dozens of furry and cute monkeys. You can see them during your journey to the top of the mountain, as well as around the temple. For the benefit of those who want to feed the monkeys, there are several small stalls around the temple that sell food items such as bananas, corn, peanuts and other flavors that they like. It is important to note that you should not try to approach or touch the monkeys and that you should pay attention and keep your personal belongings safe. The monkeys can be quite cheeky and even bite.

The top of the mountain can be reached in different ways. The sporty option is climbing, that is, going up the stairs. Beyond extracting bones, the green track will give you great views of the spectacular landscape around. If the weather is nice that day, you can even get a view of the whole of Hua Hin. An easier option is to take a tuk-tuk, taxi or motorcycle to get to the top of the hill.

The ascent to the temple begins at the beach at the foot of the mountain, the departure point is from the on-site restaurant. From there, you can witness the beautiful Buddha statue, 20 meters high, overlooking the sea. A little later, you will reach a steep slope that leads to the top. When you arrive, take a moment to sip some fresh air and enjoy the peaceful and pastoral atmosphere of the place.
At the top you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area and visit the complex of small temples located there.

A slightly unusual temple is the Chinese temple. The same temple is decorated in blue-red-gold colors and on its walls you can see ancient paintings that tell about old Chinese myths. Inside the temple stand two traditional Chinese statues. One is of the well-known Chinese goddess Guanyin, who has a thousand arms. The second is Pu Tai - the "Laughing Buddha". Don't forget to rub the belly of the Buddha and dangle some coins to get a lucky blessing.

To get to the hill you can take a tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi from anywhere in Hua Hin. The cheaper option is songthaew (which should cost around 20 baht).

Entrance to the complex is free and does not involve payment.
